The GSSC Food Bank was developed over the course of the 2015-2016 academic year and went live during Reading Days (a week before finals) during the spring semester. At its core, the GSSC Food Bank is a student-organized, and student-funded initiative to provide non-perishable food to GS students who have varying levels of food insecurity.
Over the course of the last four months, the GSSC Food Bank has reached upwards of 50 individuals who have food insecurity issues. More specifically, a significant portion of the original $1000 budget set aside for the Food Bank in late April 2016 went solely to purchasing food. This covered two major food purchases from Aldi, a nationally recognized discount grocery store. Using these food purchases, we were able to assist approximately 30 individuals before the end of the semester. Rough calculations place the average food disbursement at approximately $29-33 per person. This covered enough nutritious non-perishable food to last each person two to three weeks. Starting after the 2016 Commencement Ceremonies, the Food Bank ran entirely on donations from other GS students. Since then, and running through today, we were able to provide disbursements for another 20 individuals.
Our goal is to become a fully self-contained organization by the start of the Fall 2017 semester. While this is an ambitious goal, it is also very obtainable. Along with permanent space in Lerner, we are going to place food collection bins in strategic locations throughout campus. This will go a long way in allowing us to maintain the Food Bank while utilizing only food donations. We are also currently working on the possibility of expanding the GSSC Food Bank to all four undergraduate schools.
In addition, we are accepting non-perishable donations. Here is a list of items we need the most:
– Plastic Reusable Bags (e.g. similar to what you would get from Trader Joe’s)
– Any non-perishable food geared towards students with families (e.g. baby food, formula, etc.)
– Canned fruits
– Canned vegetables
– Evaporated Milk (Can)
– Cereal (Box)
– Instant Oatmeal
– Apple Sauce (Jar)
– Peanut Butter (Jar)
– Rice (Brown or White)
– Pasta Sauce
